New on micro/Maker: Learning a New Musical Language Abroad

Plus, why sometimes it's important to feel sound, and not just hear it.

🍃 Loose Leaf Transmissions – Weekly Dispatch

Hey friends – hope your week has been going well.

I’ve got two new micro/Maker episodes to share, both digging into how artists evolve when they follow the pull of curiosity.

Shruthi Rajasekar talks about the winding path that led her from the U.S. to the U.K. (and back again) and how those unexpected detours changed her creative life.

And composer/bassist Emily Koh opens up about merging her musical identities and why the low end has become such an essential part of how she thinks and listens.

More on both episodes below, and a preview of next week’s music/Maker!

🔜 Coming Up Soon

Next week brings you the final new music/Maker episode of 2025 – and it’s one I’m really excited to share. I’ll be releasing it a day early because of the Thanksgiving holiday in the US, and then the show will take a short year-end break before returning in January with a fresh run of conversations. If you’re not all caught up, it’ll be a great chance to do so!

This closing episode of the year features composer Anuj Bhutani, whose creative path has taken him through metal bands, DIY songwriting, psychology studies, community college, and eventually into formal composition training. We dig into how personal history, cultural identity, and those in-between spaces continue to shape his work – plus how curiosity, intuition, and storytelling drive the music he’s making now.

And don’t worry: micro/Maker keeps going twice a week, every week, without interruption (pretty much until the end of time, if I can help it).

Oh – and I have a major new project launching in early December, so truly, there’s plenty to stick around for.
