Building Confidence through Creative Growth in Composition with Yue Song

And no new micro/Maker episodes this week.

🍃 Loose Leaf Transmissions – Weekly Dispatch

Friends, I’m really excited to share this week’s guest – a composer whose music stopped me in my tracks.

I first encountered Yue Song’s music on an album by Dublin-based Crash Ensemble, who performed and recorded her work Senses IV. Please, please, please check this piece out if you haven’t heard it already. It’s truly gorgeous stuff, and frankly, it blew my mind across multiple listens.

I’m so excited to share my conversation with Yue on the latest edition of music/Maker, where we dig into everything from her creative path to how she balances emotion, intuition, and experimentation in her music.

Also, in case you missed it: due to a little scheduling hiccup on my end, there are no new micro/Maker episodes this week – so it’s the perfect time to catch up if you haven’t yet had a chance to dig in.

Oh, and one more thing: my birthday’s next week, Tuesday, July 1st! If you’ve been enjoying the newsletter or the podcasts, I’d love nothing more than for you to help spread the word. Forward this to a friend, share an episode, or just tell someone about the work. Think of it as a little birthday gift to yours truly, and yes – it really does make a difference.

🔜 Coming Up Soon

Back on track with micro/Maker next week, with two new episodes featuring composers Austin Hammonds and Roger Zare.

Composer Austin Hammonds traces the deep, recurring impact that Jurassic Park has had on his life – from childhood awe at the soundtrack, to writing his first orchestral work, to hearing the LA Philharmonic perform the score just after moving to Los Angeles. He and Tyler reflect on how one piece of music can echo across a lifetime and quietly shape a creative path.

Then, Roger Zare shares how his passion for science – from NASA missions to subatomic particles – has become a major thread in his composing life. He talks with Tyler about translating scientific ideas into sound and how pieces like The Green Flash bring natural wonders to the concert hall.
